Diversity in the workplace: Women in the workplace experience unequal treatment.

A Spotlight on Gender

Study and Purpose:

The study was carried by McKinsey and Company (2021) and it focused on the different treatment that diverse women groups in the workplace experience.

Key Findings:

The study found that diverse women in the workplace face micro-aggressions based on their race and physical traits compared to their male counterparts. However, McKinsey and Company (2021) alluded to the fact that for women of colour and women with other traditionally marginalized identities, these experiences are more frequent and reflect a wider range of biases. As a result, this reveals unequal treatment of men and women, women, and their diverse groups at work, which affects their competence. About 31% of women’s decisions are questioned compared to at least 24% of men’s decisions. The study also revealed how women, particularly women of colour, experience bad treatment based on their race: 32% of black women get interrupted or spoken over more than 29% of Asian women and 27% of white and Latina women. A key finding of the study is that women with disabilities are more likely to experience such micro aggressions than other women. 40% of women with disabilities, for example, were interrupted or spoken over at work, compared with almost 15 % of men overall.

Conclusion:

Enhancing equal treatment at the workplace is key to ensure concentration and productivity at the work place. In addition, it is important to fully embrace the concept of diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) by facilitating equal treatment of every race at the workplace.
