Intersectional exclusivity at workplace: The Case of Latina Women

Study and Purpose: The study was of women in the corporate America, carried by McKinsey and Company (2021), that focused on the peculiar experiences that Latina women face at the workplace whilst reflecting on the burden of unpaid work they carry as it hinders their effectiveness at work.

Key Findings: The study revealed that, “Latina women are a minority ethnic group that are identified immigrants and compared to women of other races and ethnicities, Latinas hardly find time off for personal reasons. Almost a third of Latinas are on “double duty” carrying out household and care giving responsibilities that adds significantly to their workload. Due to their double-duty caregivers’ status, Latina women are burn out than other women and have considered downshifting their careers or leaving the workforce”. McKinsey and Company (2021). Thus, enhancing flexibility for Latina women would help them to be productive and able to balance between work and personal mandates.

A key factor of the study is that forty-three percent of Latinas are currently spending five or more hours per day on housework and caregiving, compared to only 34 percent of women overall. Therefore, resulting in low productivity at the work.

Conclusion: It is important to enhance productivity and employee engagement to ensure a holistic understanding of women lives including household responsibilities and caregiving that could help address aspects that cause stress, fatigue and low performance at work.
