Sally Mugabe was the first wife of the first president of Zimbabwe, Robert. G. Mugabe. She is an indelible figure in the world of feminism and justice for women, as she was one of the first women to rally against the inhuman treatment women received from men. The fact that patriarchy was at its highest peak in the country, she knew there was a lot of fighting to do, and her social position made it easier for her to suggest laws against female segregation and abuse in the country’s constitution. She was secretary-general of the ZANU-PF women’s league, founder of the Zimbabwe Child Survival Program, and a backer of the pan-Africa consortium Akina Mama wa Afrika. She also launched the Zimbabwe Women’s Co-operative in the UK. She was a great feminist, inspiring many women’s rights activists and NGOs around the African continent.
