Christine de Pisan, the first woman to earn a living through her books which spoke out against female chauvinism

Women in History

Christine de Pisan was a medieval writer and historiographer who advocated for women’s equality. Her works, considered to be some of the earliest feminist writings, include poetry, novels, biography, and autobiography, as well as literary, political, and religious commentaries. Christine was married to a man that supported her work, despite the treatment of women during this era. When he died, she decided to continue writing to support her children and mother, hence becoming the first woman to earn a living through her literature. Her two most famous works are the books Le Dit de la Rose (The Tale of the Rose), 1402, and Le Tresor de la Cité des Dames (The Book of the City of Ladies).
